Before you book your trip, take a moment to think about what you’ll need and what to expect...

We all have our strengths and weaknesses. I'm not great at research or planning a travel itinerary... mainly because I like the element of surprise ;) But I tend to excel at the boring grandma stuff, like sorting out insurance, contemplating sensible luggage options and pre-ordering the correct currency.

Everyone's different, so I decided to create a cheeky list that may be useful if you're about to embark on an epic Icelandic adventure...

1. Buy insurance*

2. Consider the benefits of a pre-paid travel card. I found 'Caxton' to be an excellent provider.

3. Pack lots of thermal clothing (…if you're restricted to x1 cabin bag, I'd highly recommend that you waddle around the airport in a bunch of layers!)

4. Look into how you'll travel from the airport to Reykjavík city centre.

5. Find out if any local festivals are taking place. Art, culture, music, dance, food... 👀

6. Consider The Golden Tour

7. Sample the local cuisine.

8. If you're a "spa and mountains" kinda person, definitely check out the luxurious Blue Lagoon

9. Book the Northern Lights Tour for the first night if you can. This way, if they’re not visible then you should be able to try again for FREE another night**

10. Get your picture taken with Thor. Obviously.

*UK citizens require: ‘Europe 1’ policy

**Make sure you check this option with the tour company prior to your trip
